Developed by the City of Edinburgh Council in partnership with CCG (Scotland), Western Villages is the flagship development of the Granton Waterfront Regeneration Framework – a £1.3bn, multi-year plan to transform the area into a new, sustainable coastal community.
First Minister John Swinney visited the 444-home project to announce that £16m from the Scottish Government’s Housing Infrastructure Fund will be granted to the Council to undertake crucial infrastructure works associated with future phases of affordable housing delivery.
Mr Swinney was met by representatives from the Council, CCG and Arc-Tech (Scotland) who were on hand to provide information on the development’s hugely innovative, zero-emissions heating system.
Designed and installed by Arc-Tech in partnership with Hawthorne Boyle, the heating system comes in the form of a centralised source (instead of individual water cylinders) housed within a purpose-built energy centre located within the Western Villages Masterplan.
Known as a combined Air Source Heat Pump System (cASHP), 12, industrial-scale air-source heat pumps and 8, water-to-water source heat pumps combine to provide space heating and hot water services. They are connected by 12,000m of insulated pipe network which feed into each dwelling, connecting to a Heat Interface Unit (HIU) for individual billing and conventional heating appliances.
The system forms part of a wider energy strategy installed by Arc-Tech – including the installation of 2800 solar PV panels – as well as the installation of sprinklers in accordance with the BS9251:2021 standard.
