Case Studies

The Broomhill Gardens Community Hub is a new facility that has been delivered on behalf of Inverclyde Association for Mental Health located in the town centre of Greenock.

The new centre has transformed two derelict brownfield sites into a series of streets dividing the site into three distinctive areas: The Walled Garden with Community Rooms, The ‘Green Route’ with ornamental gardens, growing gardens and demonstration areas. It offers local residents a new community hall, coffee shop, training & meeting rooms together with new dedicated office space for Inverclyde Association for Mental Health’s trading subsidiary “In-work Enterprises Ltd”.

In-work Enterprises Ltd is an award-winning social enterprise owned by Inverclyde Association for Mental Health who will manage the training, voluntary and work-related opportunities for people in the Inverclyde area who have experienced mental health issues or who have experienced long-term unemployment. The new facility will allow the ambitious social business to expand its business and offer additional training opportunities in office and catering skills alongside existing horticultural and landscaping training.

The principal community and training building is conceived as a walled garden where the topography rises to partly conceal the depth of the single storey building. With its green roof and densely planted courtyard, the scheme takes its cues from Greenock’s rich history of terraced green spaces and parks, rather than from the massing of adjacent tenement buildings. Pedestrians will also get to experience the garden via an arterial pedestrian and cycle route that will connect the site to the surrounding areas.

The walled garden enclosure is formed by the placement of the various buildings and components which make up this section of the site. The garden is conceived as a community orchard with a mixture of semi-mature trees, wetland edges (which also support the SUDS), precast concrete benches and dutch clay brick paving.
